Submission in Support of a Music Curriculum that Supports the Cultural Identity, Industry Needs & Classroom Realities of Aotearoa
Recorded Music NZ has made a submission to the government’s consultation on The Arts Years 0–10 Learning Area schools curriculum.
We support the submission made by the New Zealand Music Commission on behalf of the contemporary music industry in Aotearoa New Zealand and each of the Key Priorities and Practical Recommendations set out therein. As an organisation we also submit that there would be significant benefit in:
- Stronger integration and consistency of copyright teaching across Phases 2-4 e.g. emphasising good digital citizenship, copyright basics and ethical practices
- Greater incorporation of music from Aotearoa in teaching, including both historical and contemporary recordings, to establish the importance of aotearoatanga (national identity), and to foster a supportive audience for local talent and to inspire the next generation of creators
We support strengthening a knowledge rich curriculum that enables all young people to thrive. Music supports wellbeing, identity, self-expression, and inclusive learning environments. It also builds the audiences and workforce that sustain Aotearoa’s creative industries.
