Copyright (Parody & Satire) Amendment Bill – Submission of Recorded Music NZ to Select Committee
Recorded Music NZ has made a submission to the Select Committee regarding the Copyright (Parody and Satire) Amendment Bill. We oppose the Bill because, regardless of the merits of the proposal, these issues should be addressed within the government’s review of copyright law that has already been started. The Bill would take rights away from artists and rights holders with no consideration of other areas of copyright law that need to be strengthened.
New Zealand still has an outdated 50 year copyright term and urgent action is needed to extend to 70 years in line with global standards. We are asking the Select Committee to reject the Bill and recommend that government acts to progress its review and extend copyright term as soon as possible.
